KnobShift 0.2 – new Mac package and major updates to the iPad app

KnobShift 0.2 comes with a new Mac package, and at the same time the iPad app has had its biggest overhaul so far. The app has a new look, you can create and share your own dashboards, and working with Logic Pro is more stable. KnobShift is still a test release.

Mac package 0.2.0 and 0.2.1

  • DAW detection: the KnobShift Bridge reports whether it's running in Logic Pro, Ableton Live or another DAW, and the Ableton script reports Ableton Live. Dashboards per DAW build on this.
  • Crash with external MIDI fixed: the Companion could crash when an external MIDI 2.0 source sent data.
  • Crash when switching plugins fixed (0.2.1): switching the plugin in the bridge several times could lead to crashes. Old plugin windows and plugins are now removed with a delay.

New interface on the iPad

The iPad app no longer uses tabs. Instead, it has fixed sections such as oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, modulation, effects, arp and global.

  • Performance start page: eight large faders. If the plugin has macros, they land here automatically; otherwise the most important parameters do.
  • Synth-style modules: a section shows all of the plugin's modules side by side, such as oscillators A, B and C. Modules with many controls are split into sub-sections by function.
  • Draggable curves: you shape envelopes and filters directly as curves.
  • Customize: choose how a control is displayed, assign the start page and hide parameters. Settings are saved per plugin.
  • All Parameters: a searchable list to find any parameter quickly.
  • Track strip and connection status: the tracks are at the bottom, and the connection status at the top opens the help directly.

Dashboards per synth and DAW

Dashboards let you put together your own selection of controls for a synth, optionally for one DAW only. KnobShift picks the matching dashboard automatically when you connect. You share dashboards as .knobshift files via AirDrop, the Files app or Messages. For Serum 2, KnobShift ships a default dashboard with four pages.

Imported files are read strictly as data. Dashboards also keep working after plugin updates: if a parameter is missing, its slot stays in place with a hint. Everything you need is in Create, share and import dashboards. Ready-made dashboards are in the dashboard library.

Connection guide with troubleshooting

The app walks you through connecting via USB, via Wi-Fi and the demo step by step. If something doesn't work, a question-and-answer troubleshooter leads you to the fix. The same steps are in The KnobShift app can't find the Mac.

Nine languages

The app is now available in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean and Chinese (Simplified). You set the language in the iPad's settings under Settings → Apps → KnobShift → Language.

Update now

Download the current package from the download page and install it over your existing version. Because the package isn't notarized by Apple yet, allow it as you did the first time under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. The steps are in Install KnobShift on your Mac.

Frequently asked questions

How do I update to the KnobShift 0.2.1 Mac package?

Download the package from the download page and install it over your existing version. The installer quits the running Companion by itself first.

Is the KnobShift app on the App Store now?

No. The iPad app isn't on the App Store yet; testers currently get it directly from the developer.
